Biography

Dr. Shulamit Sarid is a cellist, researcher, lecturer, and educator. She has performed as a soloist with the Israel Chamber Orchestra (Recanati Auditorium, Tel Aviv Museum, 2005), the Thelma Yellin Symphony Orchestra (Mann Auditorium, Tel Aviv, 2009),L’Orchestre classique de Montréal (Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, Montreal, 2019), and the McGill Contemporary Ensemble (Pollack Hall, McGill University, 2019). She also opened the 2016–2017 season of the Royal Conservatory Orchestra at Koerner Hall, Toronto.

As a member of Uccello, McGill University’s all-cello ensemble, Shulamit performed in Los Angeles, Berlin, Toronto, Montreal, and at Carnegie Hall in New York City. She is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including those from the America-Israel and Canada-Israel Cultural Foundations (2000-2018), McGill University’s Dean’s Essay Award (First Prize, 2019), and the International Grant Writing Competition (Music Performance Award, 2020). 

Dr. Sarid has won various music competitions, among them the Glenn Gould School Chamber Music Competition (Second and Third Prize, 2017; Second Prize, 2018), Ben Steinberg Musical Legacy Award (2017), Tel Aviv University Chamber Music Competition (First Prize in 2011, Second Prize in 2012), Jerusalem Academy Chamber Music Competition (Second Prize in 2015, Third Prize in 2016), Gritz String Competition (Second Prize, 2016), and Turgeman Competition (First Prize, 2009). 

As a full scholarship recipient, she participated in numerous festivals, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (2010), Aspen Music Festival and School (2016), Banff Centre Master Classes for Strings and Winds (2015), and Keshet Eilon Summer Course (2009, 2011). She performed in master classes with cellists such as Janos Starker, Lynn Harrell, Richard Aaron, among others. During her military service, Shulamit was part of the IDF’s Outstanding Musician Unit, performing for the elderly, the ill, and children with special needs. In 2012, she traveled to Poland as part of the “Witnesses in Uniform” delegation and performed at Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day.

Born in Jerusalem in 1993, Shulamit began studying the cello with her mother, cellist Ms. Bluma Sarid, at the Israel Conservatory. She graduated at age sixteen with special distinction from the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts. She earned a Bachelor of Music summa cum laude from Tel Aviv University (Dean’s List, 2010 and 2013), a master’s degree from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, and an Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto (Dean’s List, 2016–2018), where she studied with Profs. Andrés Díaz and Desmond Hoebig on a full scholarship from the David Lyons Foundation.

Shulamit completed her Doctor of Music degree at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where she was advised by Profs. Matt Haimovitz, Lisa Barg, and Christoph Neidhöfer. While at McGill, she was appointed a lecturer and Teaching Assistant. She later served as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University under the supervision of Prof. Carol Oja, and as a postdoctoral fellow at the International Institute for Holocaust Studies at Yad Vashem.

Shulamit currently teaches cello at the Israel Conservatory of Music in Tel Aviv, where she serves as the producer, artistic director, and academic director of a lecture-recital series for the general public. Dr. Sarid plays a cello on loan from Eyal Hofmekler.
