Lecture Recitals

Music, like words, is meaningful. It is historically and sociologically constructed and, as such, has the potential to convey ideological, political, gendered, racial, and moral values through sound alone. As a human phenomenon, music is a testament to the spirit of its time. It is integral to social order, being both a vehicle for oppression and empowerment, while possessing a therapeutic nature that can affect body and soul.

The Israel Conservatory of Music Lecture-Recital Series, curated and produced by Dr. Shulamit Sarid, presents a unique format that interweaves academic lectures with live musical performance and recited prose. Each concert focuses on a different theme, exploring music within broader historical, political, artistic, and scientific contexts. Every season, one concert is dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day and delves into the musical testimonies left by composers who lived during the Holocaust era.

The uniqueness of the series lies in its conception of music as an integral part of everyday life, history, and community. Through music, the concerts communicate academic knowledge to broad audiences, regarding music as a historical artifact as well as a methodological and emotional vehicle through which the lecture’s themes can be investigated.

The series has pedagogical value for the general public, conservatory students, and high school students. It seeks to engage audiences looking for new ways to experience music and the performing arts, to reimagine traditional concert formats, and to introduce new audiences to the cultural world and to the interconnectedness of music and other fields.

The performing artists are members of the faculty of the Israel Conservatory of Music. Concerts are held in the Conservatory’s Auditorium Hall, an elegant venue well suited to both musical performances and lectures.
